- When you used the AI games this week, such as Magic Sketch or AI Duet, how did you find the process of having your work completed by an algorithm? Did it feel true to your intention? Were you happy with the results?
yes, it felt like i was directig the whole things as I mapped my project out, however, each programs gave me different feelings in term’s of process, it each had the distinctive features that made me felt like completing my project thru them differently.
- Have you used Duolingo? Do you think that their approach to AI will ultimately lead to better learning? What do you think of the author’s use of the word ‘humanize’ to describe the application of AI to their software? Do you think the fact that the training data used is largely from English language learners will impact the user experience for other languages?
I personally am not a big fan of using doulingo, you can never be as casual as a person next to you, As a second language learner, i think it is to best learn language by natural means, having natural interactions are the best, for exmaple when you learn from daily life like watching movie and TV or talking to someone, these are also natural interactions inspired learning when you watch how humans speak and interpret stuff, one word and sentence can have so many different meanings depending on how you interpret it in different situations, machines can never be so interpretive as the human emotions, it is best to be humanize the learning situation in order to learn language to deepen understandings of languages to be used in different set of distinct situations.
- Have you used a tool like Khan Academy that creates a learning path for you? Did you find it to be useful or a hindrance to your learning? Or both?
yes, sometimes when i don’t understand things in class i would go to Khan academy for help, these channels allows me to go thru stuff slowly and pause at my own pace, i do not have it create learning path for me but rather i have my own learning path and integrate it as a help of mine. I personally am not a big fan on using programs to lead my learning path since I know my strength and weaknesses in what i want to learn and how i can tackle a material in terms of learning, therefore I feel like it is best to have plan it out myself rather than being directed by AI algorithms, that being said, it can definitely be a helpful tool to aid my learning process nonetheless.
I couldn’t agree with you more about learning languages. I also think that the appeal of language is in communicating with people and that human emotions, the context of the speech, the use of vocabulary, etc. cannot be simulated by AI. Just like when we talk to Siri, he can usually understand our direct commands, but cannot communicate with us. We are the ones who know ourselves best, and AI most of the time can only analyze what we may need to learn through some data, but not the most useful way for us to learn.
